20th November 2018 by Radhika Sharma

World Travel Market, one of the largest annual events for the travel industry, took place from 5th – 7th November at London’s ExCel Arena. Members of the Flagship team were present on every day of the event, which meant that we were able to gain fantastic industry knowledge and see what trends to look out for in 2019. From listening to travel leaders speak on what to expect in 2019, to challenges ahead for the airline industry and the trends shaping the future of travel, below is some insight on the sessions attended:

Business is booming

  • Travel leaders predict there will be an additional 1 billion arrivals in various countries across the globe by 2030, with the average spend per trip becoming $1,118

Growth in Chinese travellers

  • China will become a global tourism leader by 2030, as both a leading destination and a leading outbound source market

Taking flight

  • The airline industry faces a number of challenges, including the increase of fuel prices that hits profitability. In the last 12-18 months, fuel prices have increased by 40%

The ‘B’ word

  • The impacts of Brexit are still unclear but it could impact air traffic rights, ownership and safety regulations in the airline industry

Getting away from it all

  • In the travel sector, there has been a move towards people wanting self-enrichment, new experiences and authenticity from their trips rather than going on holiday only to relax

Travel resilience

  • Total travel sales worldwide are expected to be close to 2.5 trillion USD in 2018
