Navigating Fake News
Flagship MD Jackie Murphy has taken a look at the murky world of fake news, the growth of which has seen a rapid erosion of trust in mainstream media (less than 50% of us now believe what we read in print).  She has outlined some key points for brands that have been the target of fake news, or want to be vigilant in order to be better prepared.  Her excellent blog can be read here.

Are we maximising UGC?

Communications specialists should best consider how to make the most of recently released stats comparing Facebook and Netflix. While Facebook is free to users, they still earned $8.59 per user last year. By comparison, Netflix charged users $120 and they only earned $3.27. The lesson to be learnt? User created content has a higher ROI. So how do we implement that in our work? To continue to work closely with our clients by helping them to create genuine thought leadership and content that matters to their audience.

The rise of the B2B Influencer 

Influencers are the talk of the town at the moment and it seems they’re venturing from the latest beauty products to the latest financial products. Snoop Dogg was recently revealed as the new celebrity face and shareholder of Klarna in a new advertising campaign for the POS financing house. American Express has already led the way in influencer marketing in an attempt to “find new and exciting ways to break through the noise and reach target audiences more effectively and creatively”. It will be interesting to see how the new wave of fintechs will jump on the influencer bandwagon. See here.
Influencers and full disclosure

Last week saw a milestone in the ongoing debate around freebie disclosure amongst social media influencers. The clamp-down means that influencers must identify clearly on all posts when they have either been paid or gifted a product to review – facing legal action if they are deemed to not be acting honestly. Although the new rules seem to be causing some confusion amongst influencers and brands as to what does and does not constitute a paid for post, this is a big step forward, and a sign that influencer marketing is maturing. Five things you need to know about February

Here are our picks for what you must know about this month –  some global and some closer to home!

1. Safer Internet Day – Feb. This day is celebrated globally to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people and inspire a national conversation.

2. The Six Nations rugby tournament starts on 1 Feb with France v Wales, but can Ireland defend their crown? The champions kick off against England the following day.

3. London Fashion Week, the epitome of British creativity, innovation and edge, is taking place 15-19 Feb.

4.  Mobile World Congress starts on 25 Feb. This is the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry, incorporating a thought-leadership conference representing mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, vendors and content owners.

5. Oscar Nominations…movies and actors up for big awards. And the 91st Oscars are on 24 Feb.
